Graphic Designer of the Year (2026) - Prestige Awards
I have some news that still feels a little surreal to write down:
I won Graphic Designer of the Year in Australia Prestige Awards 2026.
Even typing that feels like I should immediately look over my shoulder and ask, “Are we sure? Did someone check the envelope? Was there some clerical error involving another Sam with significantly better posture?
But no…
It happened.
Angell Designs has been recognised as the Australia Prestige Awards Graphic Designer of the Year for 2026, and I’m still letting that really sink in. Not because I don’t believe in the work I do, but because moments like this can feel strange when so much of my business has been built behind the scenes, persistently, and often through periods where simply getting out of bed was an achievement of itself.
This award is exciting.
Of course it is.
I’m a designer. I enjoy a good shiny thing as much as the next person. But more than that, this recognition feels meaningful because of what it represents: years of growing, learning, refining, surviving, creating, and building a design practice that’s deeply connected to care, clarity, accessibility, and human experience.
It’s not just an award for making things look good.
If feels like recognition for the kind of design I believe in.
Meaning Behind the Award
There are some milestones that feel bigger than the title itself.
Graphic Designer of the Year is one of those for me.
Not because awards define the value of creative work.
They just simply don’t.
Plenty of incredible designers, artists, writers, and small business owners do brilliant work without public recognition. Some of the most meaningful work happens quietly, behind the scenes, without anyone clapping loudly in a blazer.
But sometimes… just sometimes, recognition gives you a moment to pause and acknowledge what you’ve built.
For me, this award is tied to the longer story of Angell Designs: the late nights, self-doubt, health interruptions, learning curves, client calls, rebrands, websites, content calendars, tiny details, big strategy conversations, and countless moments where I had to keep choosing the business even when things felt uncertain.
It’s also tied to who I fundamentally am as a designer.
I am not someone who came into this work detached from the world I design for.
I’m queer. I’m disabled. I’m neurodivergent.
I know what it feels like to scan a website, service, brand, or any space really, and wonder whether it was made with someone like me in mind.
That lived experience shapes everything.
It shapes how I think about accessibility. Shapes how I write website copy. Shapes how I approach health and wellness branding. Shapes Why I care so much about whether people can understand what you do, where to go next, and whether they feel safe enough to reach out.
So yes, this award recognises graphic design. But to me, it also recognises the deeper purpose behind the visuals.
Behind the Work
When people think of graphic design, they often think of logos, colours, fonts, graphics, and layouts.
And yes… I certainly do all those things.
Happily.
Definitely with opinions. Soooo many opinions… Some of which are about fonts spacing and should probably remain between me and the moodboard.
But the work behind the work is much deeper than making something visually appealing.
Good design asks questions:
Who is this for?
What do they need to understand first?
Where might they hesitate?
What could make them feel excluded?
What information would help them trust you?
What does your business need to communicate before someone is ready to book?
How can this brand feel clear, human, and consistent without becoming cold or generic?
That’s the work I love.
At Angell Designs, I work with businesses that care about people. Many of my clients are in health, wellness, and disability-based industries. They’re not just selling a product or filling a space on the internet. They’re often helping people through vulnerable, confusing, personal, or incredibly human moments.
That means their branding has to do more than stand out.
It has to support trust. Reduce friction. Make the next step easier.
A logo might be the visible part of the work, but the real strategy sits underneath: the messaging, structure, accessibility, tone, user experience, content flow, and emotional clarity that help someone move from “I’m interested” to “I’m ready.”
That’s what I mean when I talk about human-centred design.
Winning Graphic Designer of the Year feels like a beautiful acknowledgement of the direct Angell Designs has grown into.
This business began with design, but it has become much more than visuals. It’s become a place where strategy, storytelling, accessibility, lived experience, and creative problem-solving all meet.
Angell Designs now supports clients through brand identity design, website design, social media management, content strategy, copywriting, and visual systems. That make businesses easier to understand and easier to trust.
The common thread is always clarity.
This award feels like a reminder that the work has a place. That thoughtful, human, accessible branding matters. That design can be strategic and tender. That business can be creative without becoming soulless. That professionalism doesn’t have to mean stripping away personality, humour, identity, or humanity.
A Moment of Gratitude
I wouldn’t be here without the people who have supported Angell Designs along the way.
To my clients…
Thank you for trusting me with your brands, your websites, your stories, your launches, your messy ideas, your “I don’t know how to explain this but…” thoughts, and your businesses. Thank you for letting me ask the deeper questions. Thank you for being open to strategy before aesthetics. Thank you for caring about the people on the other side of your work.
To everyone who has referred me…
…shared my posts, booked a call, bought a resource, read my writing, cheered quietly from the sidelines, or told someone, “I know a designer you should talk to,” thank you.
To my friends and family…
Thank you for being part of the life behind the business. Thank you for seeing the late nights, big dreams, health days, stress spirals, tiny wins, and not-so-tiny breakdowns, and still reminding me that I’m so much more than my productivity. Running a business can look so polished from the outside, but behind every milestone is a whole ecosystem of people who keep you grounded, loved, laughing, and importantly, fed.
To my loving partner…
Thank you for standing beside me through the very really, very messy, very human parts of building a business while also building a life. Thank you for loving me through the stress, doubt, overthinking, excitement, exhaustion, and every other small moment in between. Having someone believe in me, not just when things are shiny, but when they’re uncertain, has meant more than I can properly put into words.
Small businesses aren’t built alone. Even when you’re technically the person running the show, there are always people holding the pieces of the story with you.
And, to the younger version of me…
…who started this business without knowing exactly where it would go: you did okay.
Actually, you did more than “okay.”
The slightly chaotic little design dream grew legs. Possibly wobbly, baby giraffe legs at times, but legs nonetheless.
What Comes Next
Awards are lovely, but they’re definitely not the finish line.
If anything, this recognition makes me even more committed to the work I want to keep building: brands that feel more human, websites that feel easier to navigate, social media that feels less like a performance treadmill, and design systems that help health and wellness businesses communicate with more clarity and care.
I want to keep working with people who care deeply about what they do.
That is the work I want Angell Designs to be known for.
Not just beautiful design.
Useful design. Strategy design. Human design.
Winning Graphic Designer of the Year in the Australia 2026 is a milestone I’m proud of, but more than anything, it feels like a reminder of why I do this work in the first place:
To help businesses communicate with more clarity, accessibility, and humanity.
This aware belongs to the years of learning, the clients who trusteed me, the lived experience that shaped my design lens, and the belief that good branding can make people feel less lost when they’re looking for support.
If you’re ready to build a brand, website, social media presence, or other design project that feels more aligned, more strategic, and more human, I would love to work with you.
